I appreciate a good Cuban, cigar, rum or otherwise. My only concern is an influx of subpar product that will be lapped up by the US consumer just because it has 'Hecho en Cuba' on the label.

Havana Club is pretty good stuff when you look at the older vintages. The young stuff is a bit too hot for me, but still works OK in mojitos and even as a substitute in a Caiparinha. The Havana Club Maximo is in the top two best rums I've ever had a chance to drink.

I've tasted both Cuban rum and a number of fine Cuban cigars. I was in Cuba (legally) a few months ago. I've been before, and each time I try to measure the political situation there. Your poster could be right: Cuban rum could be tippled in US bars and restaurants before too long. The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), has not been paying too much attention to the legal things allowed back into the US (aside from alcohol and cigars), so there might be a feeling of "no mas". The Cubans are planning large yacht marinas. Give that some thought. It's not in anticipation of a bunch of Canadians suddenly sailing down the east coast. It's for the closer boaters.

I'm looking forward to Cuban rum and cuban cigars at my local watering hole. Two, three years maybe.

I've never had the pleasure of tasting Cuban Rum.

I am certainly excited about the prospect of getting my hands on some, along with a fat cigar!
