Absinthe in a Can?
It looks a fair amount like Tourment Absinthe, but this time around it’s beer. Or, more specifically, Tourment “Absine Refresher” Gargoyle Citrus is a malt beverage with wormwood and other flavors. The product is made by City Brewing Company of La Crosse, Wisconsin, and it has also been approved in a Bohemian Berry version.
From time to time, TTB explains that there is no specific US standard for “absinthe,” so we wonder if it was really necessary to drop the TH out of ABSINE.

Vodka from Honey
If ever there is a contest, between wine and spirits, I wonder which has been made from a greater variety of foodstuffs over the years. Here is a budding list of commodities from which wine is commonly or not so commonly fermented. Perhaps we will someday prepare a similar list of commodities from which spirits are commonly or not so commonly distilled. On such a list we’d have to include vodka made from milk. But that one is from the past, and so today to the list we add vodka distilled from honey. Comb is made by StillTheOne Distillery in Port Chester, New York. Comb is a rare brand that has a Facebook site but no other website.

- Pear wine. This pear wine happens to be sparkling, and it’s made by Honeywood Winery of Salem, Oregon.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia Beer
This beer has a rather uncommon and unlikely combination of ingredients. The peppercorns are no great surprise, but the alcohol beverages with chia seeds seem to be few and far between. Wiki reports that chia is an Aztec word for oily, and these seeds contain large amounts of oil, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants. (Un)Real El Camino Black Ale is also brewed with fennel seed and mission figs. It is a collaboration among several brewers and is bottled by Stone Brewing Co. in Escondido, California.
If you happen to prefer your chia with a little less fennel and alcohol, you will be delighted to know that you can buy a variety of Chia Pets here (including the one showing President Obama). Leaving the purported health benefits aside, if the same seed is good enough for Chia Pets and beer, it deserves more attention.
